A Bishop Kelley High School student is expected to go home today after surgery following an explosion at a chemistry lab.

The 16-year-old sophomore suffered a deep cut on his hand yesterday morning as he and three other students mixed an unbalanced amount of potassium chloride and sulphur during a lab experiment.

Students wore protective goggles and gloves at the time, but five students did suffer minor cuts and burns to the hands and face.

Officials say the injuries could have been much worse.
