(Tonkawa-AP) -- A group of Tonkawa residents is putting a historical marker at the spot where German prisoners were held in 1943.

A dedication ceremony for the POW camp is planned for July Fourth.

Historians say about three thousand German prisoners were held at the camp more than a half-century ago.

Prisoners were sent to the hastily constructed prisoner of war camp after the Germans surrendered in May 1943.

The camp is just off U-S Highway 60.

Other P-O-W camps in Oklahoma were in Alva, McAlester, Fort Reno, Fort Sill, Camp Gruber, Stringtown and Pryor.
