NEW YORK (AP) _ Scott Bakula has signed on to star as Capt. Jonathan Archer in ``Enterprise,'' the fifth ``Star Trek'' series.

Paramount Network Television describes his character as ``a physical and intensely curious captain'' with a strong sense of duty, but is ``a bit of a renegade and is not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he is right.''

Bakula, best known for the sci-fi TV series ``Quantum Leap,'' which ran from 1989-93, will take over the captain's chair previously occupied by William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks and Kate Mulgrew.

``Obviously, I love the genre and am a longtime fan of `Star Trek,''' the 46-year-old actor said in a recent statement.
