(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Two new attempts to reform Oklahoma's automobile tag system won approval from a House committee Wednesday. The Committee on Revenue and Taxation recommended passage of bills by Representatives Todd Hiett and Ron Kirby.

Hiett's measure is House Bill 27-oh-2. It would not change Oklahoma's automobile excise tax but would reduce car tag fees to a flat rate of 85 dollars a year for cars up to five years old, 45 dollars for cars six to ten years old and 15 dollars for older vehicles. Kirby sponsored House Bill 2663.

Kirby says his proposal will be similar to the system in Texas. Texas charges a six-point-two-five per cent sales tax on car purchases and a flat annual registration fee. Kirby says Oklahoma could compete with the Texas system by charging a 4.5 per cent tax.
