(Edmond-AP) -- An Edmond group is raising funds to preserve what it says is the state's oldest schoolhouse.
Harry Kocurek is president of the Edmond Historic Preservation Trust. Kocurek says 125-thousand dollars is needed to purchase the site east of downtown. An equal amount is needed for renovation.
He says the Edmond Pioneer Public Schoolhouse Restoration Project will spend two years raising the money.
Kocurek's organization says the building was the first schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory. Built by volunteers and paid for by the women of Edmond, it opened on September 5th, 1892. It was last used as the Sanders Camera Shop and is owned by the Sanders family.
Kocurek says the trust hopes to restore it as the original one-room school.
