McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- The McAlester City Council is ending a controversial program of buying unused leave and vacation time from most city employees.
The city has paid City Manager Randy Green $579,500 since 1999 for his unused sick days and vacation time. More than $300,000 has been paid to other department heads for unused leave.
The council voted Tuesday night to end the buyback system for all non-uniformed city employees.
The policy does not affect police officers or firefighters, who have buyback policies negotiated through their unions.
