McALESTER, Okla. (AP) _ An Oklahoma State Penitentiary inmate accused of strangling his cellmate is being tried on first-degree murder charges.

Darrell Wayne Hogan is accused of choking James R. Wise with a drawstring from a prison laundry bag.

Wise lingered near death for almost three weeks before dying at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City on March 15.

Hogan was serving a 37-year sentence from Craig County for a conviction of uttering a forged instrument. Wise was serving a two-year sentence for an Osage County conviction of possession of contraband in a penal institution.
