OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma says Tuesday's election results show a 'total failure' of what he calls big government Republicans.

Democrats took control of the US House in the elections and are poised to claim control of the Senate if Democrat Jim Webb holds on to a slight lead in a Senate race in Virginia.

Coburn says the Republicans who lost are considered moderates who support a more activist government while 'unapologetic conservative" Republicans were re-elected.

He says the GOP must rediscover its identity as a party supporting limited government, free enterprise and individual responsibility.
