A Washington County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after shooting and killing a man during a fight early Friday morning.

It happened south of Bartlesville, just to the north of the Wal-Mart distribution center on US highway 75.

Undersheriff Dennis Nix says deputy Robert Hair pulled over a man for not having a tag and driving on the shoulder of the road.

Nix says the driver took off running so the deputy gave chase and tackled the suspect. Investigators say during the fight, the suspect tried but failed to grab Hair's gun, but did manage to get his flashlight. They say the man hit Hair in the back of the head with it. Deputy Hair managed to shoot the suspect just before passing out from his head injury.

The suspect died at the scene and the deputy is on routine leave pending an investigation.
