One of the NBA players who tested positive for COVID-19 was at a metro school before the game, school officials confirmed Thursday.

“There is a sense of panic about it,” Del City Superintendent Dr. Rick Cobb said. “There are a lot of people are worried.”

Utah Jazz All Star forward Donovan Mitchell visited Del City High School Tuesday for a shoot around, according to the superintendent.

“From the conversations we've had with state health officials, including the state epidemiologist the risk is zero,” Cobb said. “To be contagious you have to be symptomatic.”

However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, “Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.”

“It’s important for us all to try to educate ourselves by going to official health agency websites and getting direct information about the spread of the virus,” Cobb said. However, on the issue of spread, the superintendent said he trusts State Epidemiologist Laurence Burnsed’s opinion that no students or facility are at risk.

Cobb said the students are being monitored for symptoms but are free to come to school.

One of those students traveled with the basketball team for the state tournament near Tulsa. That tournament has since been postponed.

“I feel like people are concerned because this is a new issue that they haven’t had to deal with.” Cobb said. “There's just a broad base shut down of activities in this country and around the world right now and I think that has people concerned. It has me concerned.”

Mitchell said in an Instagram post, “I appreciate the authorities in Oklahoma who were helpful with the testing process and everyone from the Utah Jazz who have been so supportive."

The district said all Mid-Del classes are canceled Friday and they are on spring break next week, giving officials time for a deep clean.
