Vietnam Wildlife

Vietnam is an essential travel destination for anyone interested in unique wildlife. In fact, hundreds of new species have been discovered here in the last 30 years alone.

Vietnam wildlife is rare and many species are endangered. The opportunity to observe some of these creatures may not exist much longer. Despite its 30 national parks, the country still suffers from severe poaching and wildlife trafficking.

However, visiting the right natural areas can contribute money to conservation efforts. To find out more about wildlife in Vietnam, check out the guide below.

Vietnam Wildlife

It’s no secret that the jungle harbors some of the most unique species on the planet, and Vietnam has plenty of jungle. However, travelers may not be aware of the complex cave systems that are also home to unique species like the leaf-nosed bat. Here are some of the most coveted wildlife in Vietnam.

Red Shanked Duoc

The scientific world was completely ignorant of this colorful monkey until 1967. This is a type of langur monkey native to Southeast Asia.

The appearance and rarity of these monkeys are what make them so popular. They have large, black eyes, red legs, and yellowish-orange skin.

Honey Bear

The honey bear is also known as a sun bear. They’re smaller, and perhaps cuter, than their larger, more ferocious bear relatives. These lanky bears have long tongues that allow them to easily clean out beehives — thus their name.

They live in central Vietnam and north Vietnam. They are prevalent throughout the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Snub-Nosed Monkey

This strange-looking monkey is known for its alienesque features. Their snub-nose makes them look like the Voldemort of monkeys— just two holes in the middle of their face.

They also have round, pitch-black eyes that are reminiscent of something from The X-Files. Despite their uncommon appearance, they’re some of the cutest monkeys you’ll ever see.

Wildlife Destinations

To see these amazing creatures, you have to know where to go and what things to do. Wildlife can vary dramatically depending on which region of Vietnam you visit.

Cuc Phuong National Park

Located in northern Vietnam, this park is known for its exotic delacour langurs. These monkeys have an adorable, fuzzy cone head of fur. They look a lot more normal than the other species of Vietnamese monkeys, but they’re just as rare.

Ba Be National Park

Many people travel to Ba Be to see the largest freshwater lake in the country. Of course, plenty of wildlife visits the lake throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Like Cuc Phuong, this park also has majestic limestone mountains that are worth exploring.

Nam Cat Tien National Park

Unlike most other mountainous, limestone covered national parks in Vietnam, Nam Cat Tien is a lowland park. That means visitors can explore the flatlands more easily.

This site is home to a group of temples with archaeological significance. Researchers think they were built between the 4th and 9th centuries AD.
