Unprecedented times come with unprecedented results. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, as businesses close and people overbuy groceries, Oklahomans have come together to help ease hunger issues.
The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is doing its part to feed every child during a difficult time. And that takes multiple organizations working together.
"It's more than just one organization, one person, one team," said Lacy Kendrick with the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City.
The Greater YMCA of Oklahoma City has its doors open to provide childcare for essential employees. That care requires help from the food bank.
"We're on the other end of it, making sure we're getting out in the communities with those food resources," Kendrick said.
Even though classrooms are empty, school districts such as Edmond are working with the food bank to make sure students are still getting meals.
"We have parents who were fully employed, and both of them have lost their jobs. They're picking up lunches where traditionally they wouldn't have," said Edmond Public Schools Superintendent Bret Towne.
The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma has a program with boxes of food through the school year and during the summer. Those summer sites opened early to fill the need.
"It's already making a huge difference," said Cathy Nestlen with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
Everyone recognizes the need and all it takes is the change in your pocket to make a difference.
"We can't do that alone," Kendrick said.
"The food bank is one of the areas which could use extra donations," Towne added.
Nestlen explained the best way to help the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma fulfill its mission.
"If you have a little bit to give, the best way to help us respond to this incredible need right now is to make a financial donation," she said.
Nestlen said that for every dollar donated, 96 cents goes to programs and providing food.
Let's make sure these children are not left scared wondering when they might eat again.
The easiest way is by texting FFK to 501501.
You can make a $10 donation that way.

We will get through this together, Oklahoma.
