As the state plans to open back up May 1, families are still in need of resources and support as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to impact Oklahoma.

Two organizations decided to help those in their community in different ways, providing support and positivity as they work through this crisis together.

Hundreds of cars lined up at Fairview Missionary Baptist Church in northeast Oklahoma City where church members provided free food for those who need it.

They gathered 11,000 pounds of essentials and said they could feed over 1,000 people throughout the city.

“We have so many people who have been laid off their jobs, so many people who have been furloughed and don’t know when they’ll be able to continue,” Fairview Missionary Baptist Church Pastor John A. Reed said.

The food was passed out by volunteers from the Fishes and Loaves ministry. They say they will continue to do this once a month.

“We’ve got people coming and the lines have been long,” Reed said. “We’re grateful just for the privilege of sharing with our community.”

Another metro group showed its appreciation for local veterans.

Ride Oklahoma Charities drove by as they cheered, waived, and honked.

“The light in their eyes, smiles on their faces, to see us out showing our support for them,” Ride Oklahoma Charities President Bobby Daniels said. “I mean they deserve everybody’s respect.”

The group drove by assisted living centers as well. They said it’s important to show everyone that there’s hope during a time like this.

“I think this might be something we do about every two to three weeks,” Daniels said.
