Thieves targeted a metro mechanic who has the best prices in town: free.
Adam Ely started Hard Luck Auto out of his own truck in 2017.
If you buy the part, he’ll do the install free of charge.
His mission went viral and got the attention of TV Star Mike Rowe.
In 2019, Rowe surprised Ely with his own garage on Southwest 29th Street to continue his work. Ely now has two volunteers helping him.
On Tuesday, thieves busted the window of the garage and stole thousands in tools and a laptop.
“I don’t hold a grudge. I don’t think we will see those tools ever again; they’re long gone. We are just lowing forward to the future,” said Ely.
Ely hasn’t slowed down due to the burglary and is still fixing cars for free.
“It’s an absolute blessing” said Kasaundra Wicker. The single mother was getting her brakes fixed after finding out about Hard Luck Auto through the Homeless Alliance.
Ely is now encouraging people to make a donation or purchase a Hard Luck Auto t-shirt online to make up for what was stolen.
“We rely on the generosity of others,” added Ely.
