For the first time in nearly six months the school zone lights will be on at school districts across the Oklahoma City metro including Edmond.

AAA of Oklahoma says COVID-19 could make things confusing this year. They say drivers need to be on high alert for changing bus pick up and drop off times, because of some staggered school schedules.

More students may walk or bike this year because of the virus, and more parents may be driving their kids as well.

AAA says all of these things may affect traffic patterns, not just near schools, but neighborhoods and apartment complexes too.

“You need to watch for those cues one the roadside, and look for students, parents and school buses. Observe traffic safety by slowing down and watching for them,” says Leslie Gamble of AAA Oklahoma.

Gamble is advising drivers to stay off your phone, many times distractions can be the leading causes of accidents near schools.

For districts starting online like Oklahoma City, drivers are still advised to slow down in school zones.

Police say you never know when children near the school.
