OKC Memorial Marathon Opens Virtual Race To Cyclists

A Run to Remember can now be described as looking back and riding forward.

"We're very excited. We think we will add 1,000 participants that are on two wheels," said Kari Watkins, the executive director and race director.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon announced Wednesday they will allow cyclists the chance to be apart of the marathon.

"There are so many people who would rather ride a bike then run," said Bob Ross, the chair of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation.

"Cyclists have only been able to participate in this event as a volunteer," said David Rudkin, a cyclist volunteer for the Oklahoma City Marathon.

But with this being 20th anniversary and hosting this year's event virtually, officials said this was the best time to try this out.

Rudkin has volunteered with the marathon since 2016, guiding the wheelchair division.

"It is going to be a great experience," said Rudkin.

Rudkin said cyclists have a community in Oklahoma City.

"There are many many group rides on a weekly basis," said Rudkin.

He said this is the opportunity for the marathon to welcome new faces, but marathon officials have not decided if the bike ride will be a permanent part of the marathon.

"We are very excited to get the chance to do this, this one year," said Watkins.

The virtual marathon is Sunday, Oct. 4.
