As cases of COVID-19 continue to increase statewide, the state's department of corrections said Thursday that it has taken a "proactive approach" to the spread of the virus.
The ODOC, along with help from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, identified the Eddie Warrior Correction Center as a "hot spot" for COVID-19 spread after dozens of inmates tested positive for the virus last week. ODOC said it is awaiting the COVID-19 results of inmates who were potentially exposed to the virus.
When the ODOC identifies a prison as a COVID-19 "hot spot", the department said it then provided "additional PPE to staff, closing visitation and volunteer access, and shifting work stations within the facility to prevent further spread of the virus."
According to the ODOC, more than 800 women are inmates live in "open dorm units" at EWCC.
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said it is also "implementing" hot spot plans at Joseph Harp Correctional Center in Lexington and Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McLoud.
