A community is mourning the loss of a high school student killed while driving during Monday night’s heavy rains.

Jackson Kerby, 17, was driving home from the gym around 11:30 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and flipped multiple times.

Piedmont police said Kerby was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident and was ejected. Kerby was pronounced dead at the scene near the intersection of 164th and Sara Road.

The crash happened not even a mile away from Kerby’s home.

A memorial has since been built. Students, community members have been dropping off flowers and other memorabilia.

“He always liked to give you crap, but he was the most loving and caring person you’d ever meet,” said Brent, Kerby’s brother.

Kerby’s parents have both been put through the ringer in recent years, including mom’s battle with cancer.

The outpouring of community support has helped.

“I still feel like I should be able to walk into the house and go into his room and be able to start messing with him just like I always did,” said Brent. “I feel like I should still be able to do that, so it’s been really hard.”

Piedmont’s varsity baseball coach, Adam Skokowski, said Jackson was on track to have his best year yet with college scouts watching closely.

“We preach family, that was literally our team shirt last year, It said family on it,” said Skokowski. “It had the Piedmont “P” and so it’s going to be definitely a tough one to handle and we are going to try to work through it together.”

There is no playbook to help this team and community through. The power of prayer and each other, right now, seem to ease the pain.

“We’re going to have to take it one day at a time and put one foot in front of the other,” said Skokowski.

Visitation for Kerby has been scheduled at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Oklahoma City on Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the Church of Christ located on Memorial Rd. in Oklahoma City at 2 p.m.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help family pay for funeral costs.
