A murder stuns the small town of Fairland, which is in northeastern Oklahoma.
Ottawa County Sheriff Jeremy Floyd said he knows the family at the center of the investigation.
“Anytime we're dealing with something like on this level, it's always difficult all the way around," said Floyd.
The investigation began Wednesday afternoon at a farmhouse off East Highway 60. Floyd said the suspect is a 12-year-old girl related to the victim, and the one who reported the killing.
“She originally called 911 from a neighbor's house and saying that something was wrong with the victim," said Floyd.
Floyd said deputies found 50-year-old Alicia Williams in a recliner, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
"It's heartbreaking,” said Floyd. “As sheriff, and I'm a big Second Amendment supporter, but I'm also one of those advocates to say, ‘Please lock your guns up and store them properly.’"
Who the gun belongs to and whether Williams’ husband was home during the shooting are both under investigation.
"His normal time would be about that time when he comes home anyway, so we're trying to determine if he was home prior or after the fact, and we're looking at it was after the fact," said Floyd.
Williams’ husband was questioned and released as the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation takes over the case.
Brook Arbeitman with the OSBI said the suspect's age does make the case more complicated, but investigators do not think anyone else is involved.
"We believe we have the only suspect in custody,” said Arbeitman. “We do not believe there is any need for the public in town to fear that somebody is out there."
Ottawa County District Attorney Kenny Wright told News On 6 his office has not filed charges as he awaits full reports.
In the meantime, Wright said the young suspect is “at a place that's safe and not a threat to others."
