The Yukon Public School Board voted almost unanimously to bring students back inside the classroom later in September, instead of after Fall Break.

The board made the decision after hearing from teachers, students, and parents during a board meeting through Zoom Tuesday night.

“Everybody has a reason. Everybody has a family that has contacted us. We understand. We get it,” said Yukon Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth. “We’re going to be on one side of the other. Someone’s going to be mad always, in every decision that we make as a district… and that’s okay.”

Pre-Kindergarten through third grade students will go back on September 16. This way, the board said they can get used to being back inside the classroom and on that schedule.

Fourth through 12 grade students will go back on September 21.

This schedule change only applies to the more than 8,800 students that have been participating in distance learning. Yukon virtual school students still have to keep their semester long commitment.

“There are lots of feelings and there are lots of opinions and there’s lots of data… lots of controversy,” said board member Suzzane Cannon. “I just ask that we all be flexible and show each other lots of grace.”

The Yukon school board said health protocols like face masks, social distancing, and sanitizing practices will be in place when students return.
