The Deer Creek Public School district leaders said they plan to release an updated plan on the safest way to transition students back to in-person classes Friday, after receiving backlash from parents.
In a letter sent out to Deer Creek parents, the district said in part “Deer Creek is in the process of determining the safest return to traditional classes for our students, staff, families, and extended families. In an effort to gather information and compile data from students, parents, patrons, teachers, administrators and board members, Deer Creek is meeting with several committees and teams this week. This will allow us to best determine the schedule, timeline, and process for returning to school.”
Right now, a group of Deer Creek parents, petitioning to get their children back to in-person classes five days a week, are about 57 signatures shy of their 1000 signature goal.

Parents have also written a letter to the district with their requests, including returning to a traditional model by September 21 and a committee that would monitor and publicly report the district’s COVID-19 cases.
Signers point out the district is in a yellow COVID risk level, and they believe children should get back in the classroom immediately or within an agreed upon time frame.
Petitioners said they understand everyone wants what’s best for the students, but the situation needs to be handled in an unbiased way.
