With the deadline just two weeks away, officials are encouraging Oklahomans to complete the U.S. Census.
Local mayors and Gov. Kevin Stitt are promoting completing the census with friendly competitions and social media challenges.
“The number one county is Canadian County. So, let's try to beat Canadian County if you live in another county,” Stitt said.
When it comes to census "competition," Oklahoma is on the losing end, tied at 40th place for total enumeration.
“I know that Oklahoma can do better, and it's really key that we work to get those numbers up in these last few weeks,” U.S. Census Bureau Partnership Coordinator Emily Kelley said.
Key federal funds and government representation are at stake for Oklahoma.
The deadline is extended this year to Sept 30 due to COVID-19.
“It's simple, it's safe. It's easy, and for the first time you can respond online from the comfort of your home or waiting in the car line to pick up your kids. It's easy and it makes a decades long impact in our community,” Kelley said.
To participate online, go to www.2020census.gov.
The census can be completed by phone at (844) 330-2020.
There is also an event scheduled throughout the day Friday at the state capitol parking lot, where assistance will be provided for in-person completion.
