A large gas line explosion rocked Piedmont Wednesday night and left behind a mess for crews to clean up Thursday.
It was also a scary sight for residents. Those who live in the area said the explosion was so loud, they could feel their entire house shake.
“It went boom and fire went up in the sky,” said Clyde Smalling, a resident.
According to officials, the explosion happened about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, triggering a large fire near Piedmont and Waterloo roads.
“The earth was shaking all around us,” said Grant Christensen. “I’m surprised none of our windows broke because of how powerful this explosion was.”
Luckily, no one was hurt, but one resident said he and his wife were driving on Piedmont Road when the explosion happened.
“Power lines started popping and debris started hitting the vehicle and I looked at her and saw that a rock had hit our windshield,” said Smalling.
“It was just God's hand that kept it coming in on me,” said Joyce Smalling.
Other witnesses said the flames shot up 100 feet in the air.
“It was so loud that we ran out the door in the backyard,” said Mark Splawn. “He whole area was lit up, it looked like daylight.”
“It was something out of a movie scene,” said Christensen. “I’ve never seen anything as big explosion like that, it was the biggest fire I’d ever seen.”
Logan, Canadian and Kingfisher counties responded, along with several other fire agencies. Officials said they're still investigating the cause of the explosion.
