Youth Deer Gun Season Begins

Opening day of youth deer gun season is Friday, October 16.

COVID-19 may lead to more hunters in the woods this year.

"I think that people are really starting to feel a little cooped up from all of this crazy world that we are living in. And the outdoors provide an opportunity," Oklahoma Biologist, Dallas Barber said.

Barber said this is one of the best weekends to get kids who are new to hunting outdoors, because the weather looks great.

"Deer movement is really starting to pick up. We are starting to enter some of that pre-rut phase so we are going to start to see deer moving a lot more often," he said.

Location is key. Hunt where you see fallen acorns if deer feeders aren't doing the trick.

With young hunters, make sure to bring snacks, water and a comfy chair.

Deer numbers also look great, which will hold a child's attention.

"Provide them an opportunity to stay on the game and see a lot of deer and realize that this is fun!" Barber said.

Kids can take away memories for a lifetime and freezer full of meat!

"Teaching them that this is a way to provide food for your family. With COIVD that has impacted a lot of people financially. Especially with the way the meat market has gone lately. I think that this is a really good way to provide a good clean healthy protein for your family," he said.
