‘Wear Your Mask’: Moore Mother Issues Plea From Hospital Bed While Battling COVID-19

Twenty-two days is how long 43-year-old Samantha Williamson has spent hospitalized at the Norman Regional HealthPlex battling COVID-19. 

The single mother of three continues to make gradual improvements but said it’s been a challenge.  

“I didn’t believe in COVID(-19),” Williamson said. “I was one of those people that were telling everybody that it wasn’t real, but it is real. I am proof of it.”

It started out with pneumonia followed by a positive COVID-19 test. Williamson said she feared the worst. She was already diagnosed with lupus.  

Something as simple as breathing has become a daily struggle.

“I struggle with pain every day and then I start coughing,” Williamson said. “Coughing is the worst because it makes me feel like my ribs are broke. My chest. … It feels like there is an elephant sitting on my chest.” 

Williamson’s kids were once able to visit their mother through a window. Visits have since become too risky. 

Laying in a hospital bed has allowed Williamson time to reflect. 

“I really thought I was going to die and lose my kids and never be able to see them again,” Williamson said. “Sitting in here … it does make you think and it makes you realize that we take everything for granted.” 

Williamson wants to warn others about the importance of COVID-19 safety precautions.

“I stress it every day to everybody: Yes, this is real,” Williamson said. “It’s not fake and it is a struggle. Wear your mask.” 

Doctors told Williamson it may be another two weeks before she is released from the hospital.

Her children are being cared for by family and friends.
