A Sapulpa Police Officer is recovering after he was attacked by a dog while serving a warrant, then accidently shot himself while fighting off the dog.

Police said the dog ran out of the house and bit the officer's arm.

They said the officer was trying to fight the dog off, then pulled out his gun and shot but accidentally shot himself in the hand.

“We were trying our best to do everything outside to stay away from the dog,” said Captain Glenn Coffey with Sapulpa Police. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the door secured. It was kind of a surprise at the door.”

Police said the dog ran out of the house and bit the officer's arm and after several seconds of trying to fight off the dog, the officer fired his gun, hitting his hand and the dog.

“The dog let go of the officer and ran toward the two officers that had the female in custody. They took out their pepper spray and sprayed it, the dog then ran under the trailer,” says Coffey.

Police said they have dealt with the suspect before, and knew the dog was there. They said the dog has been viscous before.

“You know a dog is just like any human. We don’t want to have to shoot a dog. It’s not our intention to try to kill a dog. But whenever a dog has a hold of your arm you have to prepare for your safety,” says Coffey.

Police said the officer will have surgery on his hand. They said unfortunately the dog died.
