Oklahoma City Public School elementary students are heading back to the classroom in person for the first time this semester.

Pre-K through fourth-grade students will be returning to the classroom starting Tuesday, and it will be on a staggered A/B schedule through the rest of January. That means students will still be learning virtually three days per week, starting on Monday.

OKCPS says they'll continue to follow all safety protocols including face coverings and social distancing.

The district is also implementing active ionization systems which they say helps kill the virus, along with site-based contact tracing, and rapid COVID tests for both staff and their families.

According to the Oklahoma State Department of Education's COVID-19 map, Oklahoma County is in the red with more than 94 cases per 100 thousand people.

The tentative plan is for 5th through 12th-grade students to return on February 1st.
