Some Oklahomans have said it has taken them weeks, even months, to get a Real ID or renew their driver's license.
Governor Kevin Stitt signed an executive order Wednesday that will try to help speed up the process. The governor specifically cited COVID-19 as the reason for the unusually long and "unacceptable delays."
The executive order will specifically waive restrictions on tag agents to make it easier to obtain a driver’s license renewal, allow Oklahomans to obtain identification if a REAL ID is not available, allow Oklahomans to obtain a downgraded license, if necessary, and allow third parties to administer driver’s license examinations.
"We're giving more flexibility to Oklahomans, and more places to get driver's licenses, CDL's, ID Cards, or take exams," said Gov. Stitt.
“The Department of Public Safety understands and shares the public’s frustration with driver license service and is working around the clock on critical improvements,” said DPS Commissioner John Scully.
Governor Stitt also plans to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday where he is expected to announce the next steps in Oklahoma's COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan. News On 6 will carry that press conference live on-air and on our Facebook page.
