IIHS Releases Top Safety Picks For 2021

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is out with their latest round of car safety tests. A record 90 vehicles earned top awards from the IIHS. Officials say more automakers earned high ratings because of new auto-braking and headlight technology. The Hyundai motor group earned the most honors. General Motors earned just two. The Ram 1,500 crew cab was the only pickup to win a top award this year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is recognizing 49 models for providing the highest level of safety — more than double the number that earned the Top Safety Pick+ award last year.

Another 41 vehicles earn Top Safety Pick (without the plus), bringing the total number of 2021 award winners to 90 compared with 64 in February 2020.

The IIHS has not yet tested the Genesis GV80 SUV Tiger Woods was driving – that’s why it’s not on this year’s list. Two Genesis cars did earn Top Safety Pick+ awards.

Genesis is part of Hyundai Motor Group which also owns KIA. Together the company took 17 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards.

No pickups won an award last year but this year one did, the Ram 1500 crew cab.
