The U.S. Department of Agriculture is helping get affordable electric power and improved infrastructure to rural communities through a loan program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is helping get affordable electric power and improved infrastructure to rural communities through a loan program.

The $598 million package will go toward roads, bridges, broadband and energy for rural residents, tribal members and community facilities in 11 states.

In Oklahoma, the Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative will use the money to build or improve 39 miles of power lines.

The Verdigris Valley serves more than 37,000 customers in Nowata, Osage, Rogers, Tulsa and Washington Counties.
