Family Of Okla. Co. Jail Inmate Killed During Hostage Situation To Hold News Conference

A Facebook Live video showed the moments inmates inside the Oklahoma County jail took a corrections officer hostage over the weekend.

It ended with one inmate dead, and the officer in the hospital.

News 9 has been told the family of the inmate who died is planning to talk to the media outside the jail at 10 a.m. Monday.

An Oklahoma City police officer shot and killed the inmate during the hostage situation that played out in the video streamed on Facebook Live.

The inmates claimed they were taking action because they have not showered in weeks, they have been stuck in their cells for days and they have no running water.

Investigators said an inmate attacked the correctional officer who was handing out medication on the 10th floor.

The inmate took the correctional officer's keys, the video showed the officer on his knees with his hands bound behind his back.

Eventually, a TAC team got inside the jail with rifles and shields.

"They go in to identify the suspect, and then the suspect has something held to his neck. Shots were fired. Lethal force was taken. The suspect was shot on scene," said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson.

The correctional officer, who was taken hostage, was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.

Activists who protested at the jail over the weekend said conditions inside the jail are inhumane.

"It sickens me. I don't understand why people, why the administration, why the system has not been more intentional and expeditious in bringing simple humanity," said Rev. T. Sheri Dickerson of Black Lives Matter OKC
