A long road to recovery began for a pedestrian who was hit by a car earlier this month.
First responders were called to the parking lot of a Walmart at I-240 and Santa Fe around 7:30 p.m. April 6.
Witnesses called 911 after a car hit Koty Holmes and fled the scene. Holmes has since been released from the hospital.
“I don’t remember anything from that day, at all,” Holmes said. “It’s driving me nuts. I don’t know what happened, why or anything. You don’t get hit by a car every day, so it drives you crazy.”
Oklahoma City police posted three photos of the suspect and suspect’s vehicle to social media the day after the crash.
A tipster saw the photos which led to a suspect identified as 23-year-old Michelle Aguirre of Oklahoma City.
Holmes was hit so hard by the vehicle that she was seen on camera going airborne and landing on the road in a fetal position.
The impact from the vehicle fractured and broke some of her bones.
“She (the suspect) broke my pelvic bone. I have staples here on my right side,” Holmes said. “I’ve got fractures from my face all the way down to my toes on my right side.”
“I’m hurting, painful. Can barely walk,” said Holmes. “But other than that, I’m OK.”
Cameras also caught the suspect making what police call “evasive maneuvers” to swerve around two other vehicles in attempts to leave the scene.
“She was going pretty fast,” Holmes said. “The doctor said for her to break my pelvis like she did, she was traveling at a high speed.”
When police tracked Aguirre and her vehicle down at a home on Southeast 38th Street, it was missing part of the driver’s side headlight.
Police learned Aguirre was not only driving on a suspended license, but she had no insurance on her vehicle identified as a Dodge Avenger.
Doctors tell Holmes it’s too soon to tell how long it’ll take for a complete recovery. The crash has changed her perspective on life.
“It opened up my eyes a lot, to a lot of things,” Holmes said.
Holmes said she needs a walker to get around while she continues her recovery.
