Criminal charges have been handed down to a man accused of shooting a dog at a Norman dog park.
Jose Venegas-Carrillo, 29, was charged with one count of animal cruelty and another count of reckless conduct with a firearm in Cleveland County District Court Wednesday.
Around 1 p.m. on April 3, witnesses told Norman police Venegas-Carrillo arrived at the Norman Community Dog Park with a small dog that began acting aggressive.
The small dog, according to investigators, got into multiple altercations with Narvell McWilliams 7-year-old Husky, Jax.
Witnesses told police McWilliams was actively trying to keep his dog away from Venegas-Carrillo’s dog.
Investigators said after the two dogs were separated; Venegas-Carrillo shot Jax in the neck with a pistol he had concealed in his waist band instead of trying to separate his dog.
Nearly three weeks following the shooting, Jax is walking again.
“He is limping, and we don’t know why so we are going to have to take him back today and see what that issue is or what the cause of that is,” said McWilliams.
McWilliams said he is pleased with the decision that the suspect is facing criminal charges.
“I’m happy that some action is being taken, like something got finally put in stone with him,” said McWilliams. “I feel like there should be a little bit more than that.”
As of Thursday, Venegas-Carrillo has not been taken into police custody.
Despite that, McWilliams said he is overwhelmed with support.
“It’s been great,” said McWilliams. “People that don’t even know him check on Jax constantly.”
All signs indicate Jax will make a full recovery.
“I would have to ask him why,” said McWilliams. “Why do you have to do that? There is no reason to at all. Why did you have to pull a gun? He wasn’t doing anything to you.”
McWilliams said he will soon schedule a play date so members of the community can meet Jax and also show that the Norman Community Dog Park is not a dangerous place.
