A family is mourning the loss of a metro lineman who was electrocuted while on a job Thursday night in northwest Oklahoma City.

First responders were called to the 3900 block of NW 12th Street around 6:45 p.m.

Oklahoma City police said a tree service was contracted to cut down a large tree in the area.

The victim, family identified as Randy Johnson, 58, of L & R Tree Service, was up in a bucket truck above the power lines cutting a tree limb. Johnson was moving the bucket to a better location and accidently touched a live power line causing him to be electrocuted.

L & R Tree Service is made up of many of Johnson’s family.

Employees were on scene to help get Johnson down

He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Among the employees on scene was Johnson’s son, Jeremiah, who witnessed the entire incident.

“He happened to get up in the bucket and just got tangled up in the power line,” said Jeremiah. “It happened so fast. I did everything I could.”

Family told News 9 that Johnson was a family man.

“He’s a wonderful man, he’d give you the shirt off his back,” said Jeremiah. “He was the last person to look out for himself. He’s always making sure everyone else is good.”

Family said Randy was tough, having successfully fought off cancer.

“He saved my life, countless of times,” said Johnson’s niece, Heather Crawford. “Bad situations would happen; he would come and rescue me. My mom would get into a bad spot, he was always there.”

Goodbye, no doubt will be tough, but family takes comfort in knowing Johnson’s love for them is forever.

“That was one of the most things I respected about my dad, he’s more than a family man,” said Jeremiah. “It wasn’t just about this family; it was mainly about his family, but he cared about everybody.”

Funeral services are still being planned.

A Go Fund Me page has been established to help family with funeral expenses.
