Some people win state championships by scoring the winning touchdown or sinking the buzzer-beating shot.
Bethany High School senior Stefi Thanscheidt won hers with the perfect spoken word.
"I did enjoy poetry, but I don't think I had ever really connected with one," Stefi said.
That was until she competed in the 2021 Poetry Out Loud program, a national competition that puts students' poetry prowess to the test.
Stefi memorized and recited three poems for the virtual competition, being judged on things like articulation, accuracy, and dramatic flair.
"To be a state champion is just really a nice honor to receive. She's worked hard, she's really put a lot of time and effort into the program," said Paul Baker, Bethany High School drama and debate teacher.
Stefi will represent Oklahoma in the virtual national finals, competing for the top prize of $20,000.
But win or lose, when it comes to poetry, Stefi is now well-versed.
"At first it was something I just did in school, and now it's like, you can actually find hidden worlds in there," she said.
Stefi will try to advance into the top nine when the recitations are broadcast online on Sunday.
