Video shows a group of kids vandalizing the inside of an old Putnam City middle school.
The video was provided by a News 9 viewer, as a group of kids can be seen moving through classrooms and hallways breaking equipment, shattering glass, and throwing objects against walls.
"I do see people going in and out of the doors," said Suzanne Newman, a resident. "I've seen broken windows over there."
The building was home to Capps Middle School for several years, but it recently moved to a new location. One woman said since the building closed, she's seen kids even skateboarding on the roof.
"I've seen them up there by the air conditioning equipment, in the building behind," said Newman.
The district said demolition had been postponed due to unexpected delays from COVID-19.
Suzanne Newman has lived across the street from the old school for the past 25 years and she's concerned knowing this is happening so close to home.
"They have no business taking school stuff," said Newman. "It's just basic vandalism as far as I'm concerned."
In a statement from Putnam City Public Schools leaders, they said in part:
"...The Putnam City Police Department is across the street from the property, and upon reports of activity, surveillance was increased..."
They said police have also secured the buildings doors, windows, and other ways people could get inside.
A vote to approve a construction manager for future demolition of the building is on the school board’s meeting agenda Monday.
