U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City is celebrating the creation of a new sports complex for student-athletes.

Oklahoma City Public School officials will join members of the Wes Welker Foundation, Fields and Futures and Lopez Foods Thursday for groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new facility.

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on a new turf baseball field. The ribbon-cutting celebrates the creation of a new turf softball field, which was completed in 2020.

Each field is a part of the Lopez Foods Sports Complex at U.S. Grant High School.

The project is being completed through a partnership with OKCPS and Fields and Futures.

The partnership helped in building and maintaining 60 fields, courts and tracks across the district.

Fields and Futures believes athletic participation is an important tool in helping students graduate. If students can find a team, they find the classroom.

The school district said the data shows a participation in sports improves grades and attendance in addition to providing resources for a successful future post-high school.

While the Thursday celebrations are closed to the public, a larger community celebration is in the works for later this summer. The district expects the complex to be completed by then.

When the baseball field opens, it will also mark the completion of construction at all of the district’s south OKC middle and high schools.
