Ironman Competition To Stretch Into Parts Of Osage County

More than 2,000 competitors are signed up to take part in the Ironman triathlon on Sunday. The big event will stretch across three different counties in Green Country.

The triathlon starts at Keystone Lake with a 2.4-mile swim then transitions into a 112-mile bike course stretching into Tulsa and Osage counties. The last leg of the triathlon is a marathon ending at the Guthrie Green in downtown Tulsa.

Several miles of the bike path reach into Osage County, including the west side of Skiatook on Jevine Hill. The police department said some roads will be closed for several hours during the event on Sunday morning. 

Osage County Tourism’s Kelly Bland said it will be exciting for the county and Skiatook to be included in the event. Bland said competitors will have a tough challenge but will get to experience the scenery.

“We’re glad to provide the terrain, we’ve got lots of diversity in our topography,” said Bland. “We think it’s going to be a challenging course as well as a rewarding course and we love inviting everybody up to enjoy the beauty and the outdoors.”

Bland said she will be in Skiatook as the competitors come through, handing out water, Gatorade and support. Check-in for the Ironman event begins Thursday in Tulsa.
