Monday marks the first day for the new 572 area code. This will impact people who live in the 405 area code because this area code is running out of phone numbers.
"There's an overwhelming demand for telephone numbers. It's tied a little bit to population, but for the most part, it's tied to technology," said Matt Skinner with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
It is now mandatory to dial all 10 digits when trying to make a call in central Oklahoma.
If you currently have a 405 area code, no need to worry. That it will remain the same.
Local calls with these two new area codes will remain local with no additional charge.
The corporation commission said new larger businesses will be the ones to really be affected.
"The first ones who experience an issue will be any large business that wants sequential numbers for their very large systems. There might not be enough 405 numbers in sequence," said Skinner.
Emergency numbers like 911 and 811 will not change. Continue to use those three digits quick call methods.
