Women in and near Stillwater are getting a safe space to work on themselves as they work to recover from their drug or alcohol addiction.

Misty Hahn is an outreach worker with the Oxford House. Hahn said people tend to relapse due to not being in the proper environment. She’s hoping to help women battling addiction by opening a safe space in Stillwater.

“When they move in, they're going to be living with people that are just like them, who are trying to stay sober and get their lives together,” Hahn said.

The five-bedroom house will be able to help eight women recover from their addictions. Hahn said there is also space for their children, as well.

“The Mommy and Me Room that is for a mother with full-time children, the others can come and visit them, they can come and stay the night, it is family-oriented,” Hahn said. “A lot of times, women have their children and they need a safe place to go. Just because they do have their children or if they don't have their children, addiction does not discriminate.”

Before the Oxford House opened, the closest recovery home was almost an hour away in Ponca City.

“I would be getting calls all the time asking if we had one here in Stillwater because there were women in need,” Hahn said.

A couple of women have already moved into the home. Hahn believes living in a safe environment like the Oxford House will prevent relapsing.

“When I was in recovery, when I was in treatment, when I left, I knew in my past I would always go right back to what I knew,” Hahn said. “I had to change the people. I had to change the places, and I had to change my environment to get away from that so I could focus on what I needed to focus on.”

While living in the home, the women will work together to do chores around the home and pay bills for the house.

In order to live at the Oxford House, the women have to be receiving treatment for their addiction. The women can stay as long as they want but will be expelled if they relapse.
