A southwest Oklahoma City couple is searching for answers after one of their dogs was shot in the face.

The couple lives in the area near SW 44th Street and Council Road, and they have three dogs – two are now at home.

After what happened they are just hoping their tri-colored pit bull, June, is still alive.

"People don't always see dogs as family," said Kiera McDonald.

But that's how McDonald and her boyfriend, Kirk, feel about their two pit bulls and German Shepard.

"Fourth of July evening I kept them inside, and you know they were kind of antsy," McDonald said. "So, we waited for the fireworks to stop before we let them out.

She said the three dogs frequently sleep outside, acting as guard dogs. But McDonald knew something was wrong when she woke up on July 5.

"I don't know if there were more fireworks going on or what the deterrent was," McDonald said.

Mcdonald thinks the dogs got through the fence.

When they found their yard empty they started searching right away.

Hours later, McDonald got a call from their neighbor saying they had spotted one of the pit bulls, Johnny. They said he was just down the road from home.

"I thought he was covered in slobber," McDonald said. "At this point it had gotten dark, and that's when I noticed he was covered in blood."

The couple rushed the dog to the vet for help.

"According to the vet, there was the shrapnel from the bullet all throughout the top of his jaw," McDonald said. "It had shattered two of his back molars. He's got lacerations along his tongue, gumline…"

Johnny is now at home and going to recover. Cash the German Shepard was also found uninjured, but days later they are still looking for their second pit bull, June.

The couple is concerned that June was also shot.

"We really want to find her alive, but just answers at this point is what we're asking for," McDonald said.

The couple have been in touch with police and plan on filling out a report about the shooting.

If you see June, the couple asks that you call 405-274-8602.
