Christ’s Church of Yukon located on Vandament Avenue started a clothes closet back in 2015. What started in a small classroom has now taken over their gymnasium.

The whole thing started as the brainchild of Shera Porter.

“I went to our church leaders, and we talked about it, and they said, ‘Yes, this is great. Let’s do it,’” said Shera.

They initially served about four to five families, now people come from everywhere.

“Cordell, Edmond, Guthrie areas, we get a lot of people from Oklahoma City, Mustang, El Reno, and then a lot from Yukon itself,” said Shera.

All the clothing is free, take as much as you need. There’s also a hot lunch served and crafts for the kids, to keep them entertained while the parents shop.

But for the church, it is much more.

“The clothes are really just a mechanism to be able to love on people. But that’s truly what we want to be able to do, is to serve,” said Ryan Porter, with the church.

The clothing give away is the first Saturday of every month. Volunteers come in days before the event, each month to start preparing.

The entire layout is set up and organized like a real department store.

“We have a little bit of everything all sizes, we’ve got shoes, all type of personal like purses and stuff like that occasionally we’ll have bedding and blankets,” said Shera.

Everything is donated by church members and people from the community.

“We knew the congregation would give, but the fact that the community is invested in it too, and so we see people bringing things in from the community,” said Porter.

The church welcomes everyone to get whatever they need, no questions asked.

“We feel that clothes are not something anyone should be worried about,” said Shera.

The clothing give away is the first Saturday of every month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., unless a holiday falls on that Saturday.

Clothing donations may also be dropped off at those times as well.
