Starting next Wednesday, visitors will be able to set foot inside Will Rogers World Airport's brand-new terminal expansion project.
The new 135,000 square foot space will be added to the existing 410,000 square foot airport terminal.
Airport officials said the expansion will showcase the city's colorful culture and make it easier for people to get in and out of the facility.
“We wanted to construct new eight lane TSA screening checkpoints,” said Mark Kranenberg, former director for the City of Oklahoma City's airports. “We're converting our existing checkpoints to large meeter-greeter lobbies with automatic exit lanes.”
Other additions in the east concourse include larger restrooms, pet relief area, lactation room and a concessions area opening soon.
"A lot of our residents haven't yet fully realized we're going to have a lot of restaurants and retail options, many that have local ties,” said Mayor Holt. “This was an emphasis and point of discussion for the airport in the years planning it."
There will be a total of 27 total nonstop flights out of OKC with the upgrade--the newest cities including Austin and New York. Those destinations and the airlines are listed here.
Community leaders hope the project helps them put the “world” back in Will Rogers World Airport.
While the airport expansion will be welcoming its first visitors, dining and retailers won't be open until October and November.
Below is a list of retail shops and restaurants that passengers will find in the airport:
Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers
Tropical Smoothie & Café
Hatch
Vino Volo
Osteria
Starbucks
Tripadvisor
Plenty Mercantile
Tin Lizzie’s
