Person Hit, Killed In Poorly Lit Area Was In Crosswalk Leaving Tulsa State Fair, Police Say

Tulsa Police say a person hit and killed leaving the Tulsa State Fair was in a crosswalk when the crash happened Sunday night.

The person, who police have not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a Ford Expedition.

The victim, who police say was wearing dark clothing, was more than halfway across the street in an area police said was poorly lit, just outside Gate 8 at the Fairgrounds. A streetlight is directly over the gate.

“Where someone can't be seen, crossing traffic, whether they're in dark clothing or not, if you can't see them, approaching at that time of night there's not a finger to point at the if the investigation doesn't lead that way," Tulsa Police officer Danny Bean said.

Bean said although pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk, they also have the legal responsibility to not step in front of traffic. At this point, Bean said, the investigation hasn’t determined how it happened.

The crash happened at 7:30 pm Sunday, which was a half hour after sunset, in the crosswalk at 15th and Urbana, according to Tulsa Police. Tulsa Police said the driver who hit the pedestrian stopped and cooperated with investigators at the scene.

Police did not release any information about the driver or the victim.

The intersection has two marked crosswalks across 15th and is marked with pedestrian crossing signs in both directions. The sign facing westbound traffic is obscured by trees.

Tulsa Police said the driver involved was westbound, and the victim was walking north across 15th Street when the crash happened.
