A Union high school senior scores an extra point after a touchdown and makes history in the process!
Stephenie Pereff is a soccer player who decided to try out for Union football recently. She is the first female to kick and score for the team and hopes she's not the last.
Stephenie Pereff said the pressure was on Friday night at her first game kicking for the Union Public Schools football team.
"They said, 'you're gonna kick this week,'" said Pereff.
Stephenie has been a soccer player since 2nd grad, playing for club teams all over Texas and Oklahoma. She's also on the Union varsity soccer team, and she recently started a rock band called Stray Daisies with her sister.
She decided to try out for the football team two months ago.
"I was hanging out on the sidelines with a trainer girl and one of the coaches said, 'I'm surprised you haven't tried to play for us,'" she said.
After a little practice with her dad, Stephenie made the team.
"I never would have thought, and I've never kicked a football!"
Friday night was Stephenie's first time to kick, and her big moment came during the second quarter after the team scored a touchdown.
"That Friday I was on the sideline, and coach Davis said, 'OK kid, you're up.' I was like, 'oh, lord.'"
"All the boys were like, 'don't miss this,'" she said.
She made the point.
Stephenie said it felt like a dream as the first female to ever kick for the school.
"If I can inspire younger female athletes or just younger females to go for the impossible, you can do anything you set your mind to," she said.
Stephenie's coach said he wishes she had tried out earlier than her senior year, but said she earned this opportunity.
