Tulsa's Richard Lloyd Jones Junior Airport will soon have a new name following a vote on Tuesday morning.
The Tulsa Airport Authority Board voted on Tuesday morning to rename the airport "Tulsa Riverside Airport." The trust says the change was made after talking to pilots and tenants and to remove confusion with the nearby Jones Memorial Airport in Bristow.
“We are excited to unveil the new Tulsa Riverside Airport name for official use. So many of our pilots and neighbors refer to the airport by this name already, so making it official was a priority of ours,” said Austin Wheeler, Airport Manager for Richard Lloyd Jones, Jr. Airport. “Working with our tenants, we opted for Tulsa Riverside Airport so that we could reduce confusion and keep the image of an airport that is open for any and all pilots who want to stop in and visit our great city.”
The airport was originally known as "Riverside," but was renamed in 1978 for the former publisher of the Tulsa Tribune.
The meeting took place at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday
The airport will take on the new name starting January 1, 2022.
