A wanted felon was found hiding in a Midwest City backyard Thursday after leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit.
The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said Roderick Morrison, 35, was arrested after he bailed from his car. He left behind a passenger in the vehicle, who was also arrested.
Thanks to cameras on a home and alert neighbors, Oklahoma County deputies were able to detain Morrison.
“Our warrants team was out looking for Mr. Morrison,” Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Aaron Brilbeck said.
The suspect has been wanted since February on multiple felony drug and gun charges. While the Oklahoma County warrants team drove through the southeast part of the metro, they spotted Morrison driving a white vehicle and followed him.
“Apparently, he recognized that it was an unmarked police car,” Brilbeck said. “He started taking evasive maneuvers, trying to get away from our warrants team.”
Morrison allegedly led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit on city streets and then through a neighborhood near Air Depot and Reno Avenue.
“(The pursuit) at times reaching speeds of 80, 90 miles per hour,” Brilbeck said. “Extremely dangerous, so our guys knew we had to pull him over quickly.”
Instead, Morrison slowed down, jumped out of the car and it was all caught on camera. He ran through a front yard in the 1000 block of Arthur Drive and jumped over a fence into the resident’s backyard.
County officials said his female passenger stayed in the car. She drove off but did not get far.
“Looks like he just bounced out and left her there to be arrested,” Brilbeck said.
Neighbors who witnessed Morrison said they pointed deputies and K-9’s to the backyard where deputies discovered the wanted man hiding under a pile of leaves.
“He didn’t put up any kind of fight,” Brilbeck said. “In fact, he apologized when we arrested him.”
Morrison was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on three new complaints stemming from the chase.
