Several members of the faith community said their goal is to give back and that's by feeding as many people as they can for the holidays.
With Thanksgiving just a few days away, Fairview Baptist Church stepped in to help make Thanksgiving dinner special for dozens of families.
“We are giving away boxes of food as we do every month, but we are also giving away, given that it's Thanksgiving season, we're giving away turkeys,” Assistant pastor Derrick Walter Sr. said.
Cars wrapped around the church as volunteers handed out over 300 turkeys, some even taking advantage and getting a free flu shot.
“What we're going through now, the pandemic. We're going on probably around two years now. People are struggling still to make ends meet to get the necessities, more specifically food. This gives us the opportunity to lighten the burden,” Walter said.
Despite COVID-19, faith leaders adjusted.
“What we're going to do is take these things to the students at Langston University. It will be in place of the meal that we always fixed every year for them,” Janice Wilson, East Zion district women's ministry president said.
The women of the East Zion District collected food, cleaning supplies, anything you may use in a dorm room.
“It's because there's not that many places to get these kinds of things in Langston University and what we're doing is trying to bring the students some joy. To bring them some happiness because as before so many of them will not be able to go home for Thanksgiving,” Wilson said.
Faith leaders said they're blessed to be able to give back during the holidays and to be a blessing to others.
