News 9 is now hearing from the family of a boy injured in a brutal dog attack. The four-year-old's arm was ripped off by a dog.
"He is a sweet little boy," said Axel's great aunt Julie Foster. "He loves to go outside."
The little boy was staying at his grandparents' when the attack happened.
"I found out that afternoon," said Foster. "I really could not believe it."
According to Tecumseh Police, Axel's grandpa, Timothy, later told officers the little boy had reached his hand in a pen holding two adult pit bulls and two puppies.
When police arrived, the little boy and his grandma were out front, and the arm was in the dog's pen.
"Axel being little, he was able to get his little arm through the kennel," said Foster. "And his family was right there beside him he was not left alone it was an accident."
Right now, police say they do not have anything that points them in the direction of charging someone, but that depends on the DHS investigation.
Foster called her brother and his wife responsible dog owners but said they are making changes for Axel.
"They are going to move forward from now on without animals," said Foster.
Axel's relative also told News 9 surgeons were unable to reattach the little boy's arm.
"They did two surgeries," said Foster. They were not able, they had to amputate is what they did. He's stable. He's doing good. He's communicating with us."
Foster said she hasn't seen Axel in person yet, but a family member is always with him.
"We're so proud of Axel, and so proud of the care and the community reaching out," said Foster. "It has been a godsend."
Foster said if people want to help, they have an account set up at the First United Bank of Tecumseh and an Amazon Wishlist.
Those are the only fundraisers approved by the family.
