A man starts a high-speed chase with an Oklahoma County officer because he thought he had warrants out for his arrest.
The officer said the suspect would have been at home right now if he had just pulled over.
The suspect, Henry Alvarez, sped away from Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Major Charles Avery while he was on patrol. After a nearly five-minute chase, Alvarez learned no one had any warrants out for his arrest.
"The pursuit was probably about 4 to 5 minutes, which in pursuits time, is a long time," Avery said.
Avery had on a body camera during that chase with Alvarez.
The footage shows the speedometer's needle inch further and further passed the 100 mile an hour mark.
"He just kept driving and getting faster and faster,” Avery said. "Speeds of over 100. Around 125 miles an hour."
Avery said he initially saw Alvarez speed past him near Interstate 40 and Western. The chase led Major Avery to Sunnylane before exiting.
"He just blew intersections, not even stopping," Avery said.
Avery tried to pull off the chase for safety reasons, but Alvarez hopped back on the expressway and hit the gas.
"With the rate of speed that he was traveling, I needed to get back up to him,” Avery said. “At least try to make the citizens in the area know that this guy was coming."
Alvarez then crashed on Interstate 35 near I-40. Avery yelled at Alvarez to keep his hands on the wheel.
Then, Avery checked the back seat and notices a car seat.
"And I thought, ‘Oh no, we've got a child in the car,’” Avery said. “Thankfully, we didn't. I asked him later, ‘What would your kids think that you just went out here and essentially almost killed yourself?’"
Alvarez then explained why he ran.
"I have warrants," Alvarez said in the body camera footage.
"After checking everything, he didn't have any warrants,” Avery said. “Had he just pulled over and stopped, I would have written him a ticket.”
Alvarez was arrested on eluding, speeding and having controlled substances.
